Imphal, September 01 2009:
The Manipur state cabinet discussed various issues ranging from extension of suspension of operation (SoO) with certain militant outfits operating in Manipur, improving the public distribution system of the Food and Civil Supply (FCS) department, construction of new police stations along with strengthening of the state police force, imposition of curfew and others in a four hour long cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
According to reliable sources, only a few issues could be resolved at the cabinet meeting.
The Cabinet approved a proposal to set up 10 FCI godowns in hill areas.
Sufficient food grains will be stored in the godowns.
This is being done as a precautionary measure to face difficulties of shortage of food grains because of the drought in the state.
The principal distribution centres (godowns), will be opened at Churachandpur HQ, Parbung, Ukhrul HQ, Kamjong, Keiphundai, Noney, Tengnoupal, Senapati HQ, Paomata and Chandel HQ.
It was also resolved to start construction of new police stations at the earliest, though the part about the strengthening the police force could not be resolved.
Transportation of FCS goods which were the responsibility of the concerned Deputy Commissioners of respective districts was resolved to be handed over to FCS department for more efficient implementation of the public distribution system.
The prohibitory order under CrPC 144 that has been imposed on the twin districts of Imphal East and West since the first week of August to keep the law and order under control was resolved to be imposed further till the situation returns to normalcy.
Though the agenda of the meeting included various issues of the state, most of them were withdrawn due to paucity of time and they are likely to be discussed at some other time later on, said the source.
Some of the issues that could not be resolved in the cabinet meeting today included the construction of an art and culture centre at Gurgaon in Haryana, strengthening of state police force, Manitron, economic statistics, and the issue of extension of SoO with some militant outfits operating in the state, the source added.
