The 24-hour Mayai Lambi bandh called jointly by the JAC and Irom Meijrao Apunba Nupi Chaokhat Lamjing Lup in protest against the killing of Kumarjit concluded peacefully.
The bandh was called with effect from 5 pm of August 31 .
Vehicular traffic along the said route remained affected during the bandh even as schools and colleges shut down their shutters.
The bandh was total at Hiyangthang area where a large number of protestors erected road block and burnt the effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh amidst shouting of slogans demanding resignation of the Chief Minister and punishment of the security personnel responsible for killing Kumarjit.
The protestors were, however, dispersed along with the arrival of police who resorted to firing tear gas canisters.
It may be recalled here that 18-year old Yumnam Kumarjit s/o Nipamacha of Irom Meijrao Makha Leikai was killed by personnel of Gurkha Rifles during a alleged shoot-out at Moirangkhongpat in Bishnupur district in the early morning of August 25.The family members, however, asserted that the victim was an innocent bricklayer.
