Imphal, June 16 2009:
As part of the World Blood Donor Day, Shija Hospital and Research Institute and Blood bank of JN Hospital jointly organised a one-day blood donation camp at Shija Hospital today.
In all 52 persons including staff of Shija Hospital donated their blood during the camp.
Participating in the blood donation camp, Chongtham Rajmani who is the in-charge of the Blood Bank at JN Hospital said voluntary donation of blood is encouraging.
However, in Manipur, although 20,000 units of blood is required every year, the blood banks at JN Hospital, RIMS and Churachandpur District Hospital could collect and stock upto only 18,000 units.
The current rate of voluntary blood donation in Manipur is only around 10 percent.
So there is the need to instil the spirit of voluntary blood donation among the people of the State, he said, while explaining that increase in the number of people needing blood transfusion on account of HIV//AIDS infection, violent incidents, improved medical treatment and diagnosis of diseases have led to more demand of blood in the State.
