Theatre Centre Manipur (TCM) and Manipur State Kala Akademi celebrated Manipur Theatre Day at Rupmahal Theatre today.
The main feature of the celebration was distribution of prizes to the winners of the 37th Short Play Competition for Creative Directors 2006 held at Rupmahal Theatre, Imphal.
The short play competition was organised by TCM under the aegis of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.
The celebration was graced by Director of Art and Culture and secretary of Manipur State Kala Akademi Kh Sorojini, director of TCM Wareppa Naba and chairman of Rupmahal Theatre Oinam Biramangol as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
During the Theatre Day celebration, floral and other tributes were paid to the portrait of pioneer theatre activist Sorokhaibam Lalit.
Further, the Lalit Memorial Award instituted in the name of Sorokhaibam Lalit was conferred to the director of Meitei Artists Union, Mongshangei Thokchom Hanuman.
On the other hand, director of Manipur Ensemble Kshetri Jugindro was honoured with the Theatre Centre Award 2006.The awards carry a cash incentive of Rs 1000 and a citation.
The gathering also observed two minutes' silence in honour of melody king Nongmaithem Pahari and paying obeisance to the departed soul.
The best production title for the 37th Short Play Competition went to Shawomdo of Aryan Theatre, while S Rajen, L-Cha Noren and W Mitrachand won titles for best director, best actor and best music director respectively.
