Imphal, February 21 2011:
As in other part of the globe, International Mother's Language Day was observed under the aegis of Research Forum, Manipur (REFORM) at Manipur Press Club here today.
The theme of the observance was 'The Communication and Information Technology for the safeguard and preservation of languages and linguistic diversity' .
International Mother's Language Day is being observed every year on February 21 following a resolution adopted by the United Nations.
The main idea behind the observance is to promote one's own language and pay respect to those who sacrifice their lives in the cause safeguarding their languages.
Proctor of Manipur University Prof Wangkhem Nabakumar and vice president of REFORM Dr Mangsatabam Lokendra attended the observance as chief guest and functional president respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof Nabakumar pointed out that to translate a language into another language, we need to understand the culture of that particular society.
Otherwise, translation could not be done properly.
Moreover, to develop or promote a language, we also need to increase the resources, he said, adding that globalisation has given a big impact on the culture of the people.
He also pointed out that college and university research scholars need to play important role in promotion of languages.
