Campaign kicks off at five places

A series of public meetings were held at five different places of Thoubal district as part of the ongoing week-long observance being organised by Committee on Anti-Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which falls on June 26.The public meetings organised under the theme of the Week-long observance against drug abuse and illicit trafficking were held at Thoubal Bazar, Wangjing Bazar, Khongjom Bazar, Kakching Bazar and Kakching Khunou.
All those who spoke at the meetings pointed out that the problem of drug abuse and alcoholism in Manipur could not be solved by beating up the drug addicts and drug traffickers or threatening them.
Such actions will only aggravate the problem.
Rather it would be essential to ensure treatment of the drug addicts at some drug de-addiction centres and rehabilitate the brewers of illicit liquor by providing alternative means of livelihoods.
They also strongly felt that the Government should also pay serious attention to the ever increasing problem of drug abuse, alcoholism and illicit trafficking and take up necessary measures in this regard.
Among the resource persons who spoke during these meetings, lecturer of Imphal College Setharjit, MAFYF president Sapamcha Kangleipal, NIPCO president Y Nabachandra, general secretary Sunil Karam, MAPI Council general secretary Bimol, UPF president Mangi, Devadutta and O Manaobi expressed serious concern over the fact that many people in their prime have already fallen prey to the menace of drugs while many others are waiting for their last moment even as there has been no let up to the incidents of killing in the conflict ridden State.
The meeting held at Thoubal Bazar was attended by MLA of Wangkhem AC Keisham Meghachandra, CADA president Keisham (O) Taruni and Chairperson of Thoubal Municipal Council Waikhom Kishore as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Chairperson of Kakching Khunou Nagar Panchayat Salam Memthoi, president of Thoubal District United Women�s Development Organisation Kangjam Thasana Leima and retired Headmaster of Kakching Khunou Government High School Mayanglambam Chandramani were respectively chief guest, president and guest of honour of the meeting held at Kakching Khunou.
The meeting held at Kakching Bazar was graced by MLA of Wabagai AC Usham Deben and UPACO member S Muhindro as chief guest and president respectively.
Vice president of CADA Lourembam (O) Nganbi was the chief guest and Up-Pradhan of Thoubal Zilla Parishad Thokchom Santa was the president of the function held at YK College, Wangjing Bazar whereas member of Khongjom Zilla Parishad Soibam Kullabidhu, joint secretary of CADA Thokchom Phaja and Pradhan of Sapam Gram Panchayat Thokchom Setu were chief guest, president and guest of honour of the observance function held at Khongjom Bazar.
