The cease-work strike launched under the banner of Imphal Municipal Employees Union entered a new phase today with agitated employees resorting to office gherao of the IMC Chairperson Moirangjao Kabui.
Demanding release of 18 months pending salary, resignation of the Chairperson and other IMC officials in case failure to pay the salaries and conversion of numerous assurances into action the striking workers led by the Union leaders raised slogans and squatted at near the Chairperson�s office entrance.
Even as the agitated workers attempted to barge into the office room to confront the Chairperson a team of City Police arrived at the scene and prevented the matter from going out of hand.
However, four representatives of the Union were allowed to meet Moirangjao Kabui.
As the talks ended without any positive development the union members announced intensifying the agitation.
The Union vice president L Indrajit conveyed that 421 workers engaged by the IMC are facing severe difficulties in day to day life as remuneration for 18 months have not been cleared.
While workers employed on contract basis are also facing similar situation muster roll employees numbering around 96 are unpaid for five months, accounted the vice president.
On the failed talks with the Chairperson, he informed of Moirangjao stating that attempt would be made to clear two months wages which is highly contradictory to demands of the employees for payment of pending amount.
The cease-work agitation launched by the IMC employees had completed more than one month today.
Meanwhile, alleging the Chairperson of using un-parliamentary languages during the negotiation a press release issued by the Imphal Municipal Employees union demanded immediate resignation of the Chairperson and the Executive Officer.
The Union charged the Chairperson of directing the team to approach Union president Dr Kh loken and ask the former MLA to provide their pending salaries.
