In a development that could turn squarely to the advantage of the Congress in the state, sources in the Assam Adivasi Students' Association (AASA) and the All Assam Tea Tribes' Association (AATSA) today said that they would field separate candidates in the coming elections in the state.
According to the sources, there was however a possibility of the AASA aligning with the United Democratic Front in some areas which while being dominated by the tea workers' community also had substantial minority votes.
"If the minorities in such segments vote for us, we stand a strong chance of winning a significant number of seats," a senior AASA leader said, speaking on conditions of anonymity.
AATSA president Prahlad Gowala meanwhile reiterated that the AASA did not have enough representation among the community.
"There is an 80 per cent chance that we will will support independent candidates in the polls rather support any political group as we are a nonpolitical organisation," he said, adding that the AATSA would not, however, field candidates from their own organisation.
In the final analysis, however, the present situation could eventually benefit the Congress which could otherwise lose scores of seats in the upper Assam tea belt area following challenges from organisations such as the AATSA which allege that the party has done nothing for their community after having used it as a votebank for decades.
