Chancellor of Manipur University Governor Arvind Dave expressed confidence that inspite of some setbacks suffered earlier in the past the highest place of education in the state will continue to churn out quality products.
In his address as the chairman of the 25th meeting of the Senate of MU today the Governor regretted that contrary to aspiration of state people that the University would be an esteemed institute in the North East Region did not live upto the expectation as is evident from students of Manipur itself preferring to pursue higher education in other States of the country.
He, however, stated that taking into account the University has completed only twenty five years of existence should be the basis for further improvement on the academic front with active endeavor of the faculty members and cooperation of the people of Manipur.
On the brighter side he referred to recent phenomenon of successful conduct of various examinations, normalcy in academic atmosphere, timely declaration of results and increase in number of research scholars as the main foundation for the University to march on in the positive direction.
Arvind Dave also stressed on deriving the congregation of large number of esteemed officials and senate members to introspect and chalk out steps for further alleviation in the standard of the university.
It beyond doubt that education - especially higher education - is that endeavor which will catapult Manipur into the higher orbit of development, said the Chancellor adding the linkage between education and development is direct, simple and undisputed.
While the universal education disseminates the fruits of education universally, higher education enhances human capital, which in turn makes higher growth possible, remarked Arvind Dave.
Prior to the Governor's address members present on the occasion observed one minute silence in honor of departed souls who constituted an indispensable portion and charted the future of Manipur University towards progress.
Presenting the annual re-port, the Vice Chancellor Prof N Bijoy exulted on the fact that several quality students could be produced from among 73 colleges affiliated to the university, listing 1500 students to have completed post graduate courses during the 2003 session, 400 scholars thronging the University for doctoral degree out of which 89 have been conferred with the degree.
The report also mentioned 31 scholars to have been conf-erred with the degree under Junior Research Fellowship of the UGC.
Achievement of the university students in diverse fields including exploits to enviable level in the sporting arena also had substantial mention in the report of the Vice chancellor.
The senate session deliberated on agenda like confirmation of the 24th senate proceedings held last year; report of proceedings of the University syndicate meetings held in between January to December last year; annual report of the varsity prepared by School of Humanities Dean Prof Devaraj; and statutory audit report (2001-02), annual account (2001-02), revised estimate and financial estimates (2004-05).The financial reports were prepared based on records of transaction in consonance with UGC guidelines, explain-ed dean of School of science Prof Ch Amuba who presented the report on finance.
He also asserted that based on the report preparation Central Government had sanctioned Rs 697.50 lakhs for infra-structure development of the University under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources as part of the Centres university development programme of the North Eastern States including Sikkim.
Prof Amuba further stated that out of the total sanctioned amount Rs 98.75 lakhs have already been released to Manipur government during the 2001-02 session as first installment, Rs 40.27 lakhs in 203-04 while expressing confidence that the balance amount of Rs 558.48 lakhs would also be released soon.
He further informed that the Centre has been intimated to provide further assistance of Rs 22.65 crore under NLCPR for infrastructure development of the University.
