Imphal, January 05: The opening ceremony of the 15th Inter-District/Battalion/Unit Sports Meet 2004 of Manipur Police was held at Khuman Lampak Main stadium today with Additional Director General of Police Y Joykumar receiving the saluting of the march past contingent as chief guest.

March past contingent of the II India Reserve Bbattalion (IRB) bagged the first position followed by III IRB in the second spot while Ist Manipur Rifles (MR) and Manipur Police Radio shared the third slot.

On the opening day, football, volleyball and athletics events were also held.

With a throw of 10.10 metres RK Bobby of 2nd MR claimed the top honour in shot put event relegating S Ibochou (9.84) of 7th MR to the second spot while 5th MR�s N Dhaneshwor had to be content with the third position with a throw of 9.68 metres.

The III IRB quartet of Th Tomba, Th Suranjoy, K Premjit and W Jotin timed 3:49.02 secs to win the 4x400 metres relay final with Th Subol, Kh Ajit, M Shyamsunder and Th Chandramohan of 8th MR securing the second position with 3:53.48 secs.

L Ratan, Ch Ingobi, Md Abjad Khan and I Ibosana of II IRB stopped the clocked at 3:55.52 to take the third position.

In football competitions, II IRB defeated SP Imphal West 2-0; Manipur Police Radio blanked 1st MR 2-0; 6th MR pipped 7th MR 1-0; 8th MR overpowered SP Senapati 4-1; as III IRB routed SP Churachandpur 11-0.In volleyball league matches where 16 units clustered into four groups are vying for the top honour, II IRB overcame SP Bishnupur 23-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-21; 1st MR defeated 8th MR 25-20, 25-15, 25-22; III IRB edged past 6th MR 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13; as 7th MR beat Sp Ukhrul 25-14, 25-13, 25-10 in the opening matches.

Five athletes of the III IRB were among the 100 metre finalists that also include Ng Rakeshwor (8th MR), M Ranjit (II IRB) and L Nandakumar (I IRB).
