Imphal, January 06:
The proscribed KYKL has asked all the headmaster/headmistress of schools to make the Phanek a compulsory uniform for all girl students promoted to Class IX and Class X from the next academic session.
In a statement issued to the press today, the outfit said that the decision to make Phanek compulsory for girls studying in Class IX and Class X was taken after its cadres conducted a survey and found that there was nothing wrong with the prescribed uniform.
Explaining the decision to go ahead with the Phanek code, KYKL said that it is important to first lay the foundation towards self sufficiency without depending on others.
To work towards the attainment of the stated objective it is important for the people to do whatever they can to protect their identity.
Promoting the wearing of Phanek is one such step towards this, said the statement.
The Phanek will help to a large extent in moulding the character of the young girls, help them maintain dignity and is in sync with the economic status of the people of Manipur.
Prescribing the Phanek as a uniform also means that there will be no gaping differences between the poor and the rich.
This will also give a boost to handloom and give earning opportunity to quite a number of people, reasoned the outfit.
This may appear to be a small matter, but a beginning has to be made somewhere, said KYKL and recalled that today Manipur is in such a dire strait because such small matters have been ignored for long.
