Imphal, January 06:
International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) India Chapter is all set to undertake the conservation works of some of the historical structures located inside the Kangla Fort.
The conservation works are most likely to be started within the current month as ICOMOS experts had already surveyed the site twice, the latest being in December 2004, a highly placed source in the State Archaeology told The Sangai Express today.
It may be noted here that members of the Kangla Fort Board had in a meeting very recently given its approval to hand over the conservation works to ICOMOS, New Delhi.
The structures to be repaired at the historic fort include Govindajee Temple, Brindavanchandra, Yuvaraj Tikendrajit Temple and the top most portion of the Govindajee temple.
In consultation with the ICOMOS experts a pair of Kangla Sha will also be put up along side near the entrance at Uttra besides a Pakhangba temple, the source said.
All new structures/buildings at the fort will be constructed in the same design as it had been built by the Kings of Manipur.
The main purpose of such conservation work is to strengthen the age old structure without using the modern method of construction; sources said and added that the fragile parts of the structures will be dismantled with least damage to the building materials.
The same materials particularly the bricks will be used in repairing the same structure with a new mixture of Surki and Lime, he said adding that a little amount of cement may be added if the quality of lime is poor.
Mention may be made here that parts of the age old Govindajee Temple had caved in, in July 2003.
