Imphal, January 06: A function presided by the Manipur Assembly Speaker TN Haokip was held at the Assembly Committee Room today to formally kick-start the functioning of the three Assembly Financial Committees.

The Committees include Public Account Committee with RK Dorendra as the chairman, Estimate Committee with Vivek Raj Wangkhem as the chairman and Public Under- taking Committee with T Manga Vaiphei as the chairman.

In his speech on the occasion, the Speaker stressed on the indispensable role of the Committees to provide a transparent and accountable Government.

The scope of the Financial Committees is not only limited to keeping tabs on development works executed by the Government departments but to scrutinise programmes and expenditures of the Government as well as suggest measures to rectify flaws in governance, expressed TN Haokip.

Expressing confidence that the Committees will come up with positive recommendations to make administration more effective and streamline functioning of the departments and pursue appropriate remedial measures, the Speaker also suggested that the Government should take prompt action on the suggestions given by the Committees.

TN Haokip also desired that the State Government issue certain directives to the Government Department employees and officials to extend all possible cooperation to the Committee members for overall expeditious development of Manipur.

Four Maruti cars (Esteem) purchased by the Assembly Secretariat were handed over to the three chairmen of the Financial Committees and Hill Areas Committee Chairman for their official use.

The vehicles were reportedly purchased at over Rs 5 lakh each.
