In a major achievement for the premier medical institute of the North East region, a penile re-implantation surgery was successfully performed at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in March last year.
In an exclusive chat with the Sangai Express today, RIMS Director Dr L Fimate said the surgery was conducted by a medical team consisting of Dr Birkumar Sharma and Dr Bobby Sharma of Department of Surgery.
The penile re-implantation surgery was conducted on an 18 year old youth who cut off his own private part and was admitted at the RIMS Hospital on March 7 evening, said Dr Fimate.
He also informed that the surgery lasted for about five and half hours with skin grafting operation done on the 33rd day after the surgery with the patient returning home in normal condition after the 58th day of admission.

On development of the Institute, the Director expressed hope that the 11th Finance Commission will be generous in earmarking the funds for RIMS and said that plans are afoot to establish nursing and dental colleges having 20 seats each.
Once the proposed colleges are constructed, RIMS will gain recognition as a deemed university which will further provide impetus to update equipments, Dr Fimate explained.
Stating that super speciality courses would be opened from the next session at RIMS, he also informed that a proposal is on to establish a super speciality Out Patients Department (OPD) within the campus.
Super speciality courses would be offered in medical sciences like neurology, cardiology, plastic surgery and paediatric.
On what action can be taken against medical personnel found taking or accepting bribes or negligence, Dr Fimate informed that the matter can be apprised to the Medical Council for appropriate action.
Describing illegal activities of medical personnel as a �Dichotomy�, Fimate said in case of death due to negligence, the family may complain to the Clinical Court for investigation as well as compensation.
