Imphal, April 04 2009:
Clarifying about the assault on Manipur University Students Union president Ksh Narayan, the DESAM has asserted that Narayan was penalised for his mortifying and disrespectful attitude shown to DESAM volunteers who went to office yesterday.
The DESAM volunteers went to MUSU office to ask for a clarification on the defamatory press release issued by MUSU which targeted DESAM based on Ashirjit Luwang who has been already expelled from the primary membership of DESAM.
Speaking to media persons this afternoon, DESAM general secretary Yumnam Ratankumar said that the MUSU's press release published on April 2 and 3 made derisive and defamatory remarks against DESAM, which have the potential to project DESAM in the wrong light, based on the forged certificate used by Ashirjit who was already expelled from DESAM on November 29 last year.
In this connection eleven DESAM volunteers went to MUSU office at about 2.30 pm yesterday to demand an apology from MUSU.
But Ksh Narayan treated the DESAM volunteers with disrespect and in a mocking manner.
This prompted the DESAM volunteers to punish Narayan, Y Ratankumar said.
DESAM also asked the intention of the MUSU president in profiling Ashirjit "as former president of DESAM which identifies itself with quality education".
DESAM further accused Narayan of disturbing academic atmosphere of MU and sealing the administrative block.
It further alleged that MUSU in cahoots with the VC conducted interview for recruitment of teachers without subject experts besides allowing candidates who did not fulfil prescribed criteria to attend interview, in their attempt to recruit their favoured candidates.
Taking part in the press meet, DESAM advisor PC Newton said that the eleven DESAM volunteers who punished Narayan have been declared heroes.
He also demanded unconditional release of the eleven arrested DESAM volunteers.
Saying that DESAM would not entertain compromise with any one on quality education, it also asked all concerned not to disturb academic atmosphere of MU by creating an issue.
DESAM further asked Narayan and his accomplices not to make attempts to win sympathy ahead of the MUSU elections.
