Two teachers from Manipur, namely S Shokhothang Haokip of Ibotonsana Girls' Higher Secondary School and Promosini Devi Takhellambam of Motbung High School are among the nine teachers from India who have been selected for the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), a six-month long professional development programme slated to begin in the US from January 6, 2009 .
Sponsored by the US Department of State and administered by the United States-India Education Foundation (USIEF) and International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), ILEP is designed specially for secondary level (class IX to XII) teachers of English, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science in schools in Assam, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
In addition to teachers from India, ILEP will also bring together teachers from Near East, South Asia and Southeast Asia to the United States for the professional development programme that will further develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills and increase their knowledge about the United States.
The program will consist of a semester-long academic program at a US University including coursework and intensive taining in teaching methodologies, curriculum writing, teaching strategies for their home environment, educational leadership, as well as the use of computers for internet and work processing as tools for teaching apart from an internship at a secondary school to engage participants actively with the American teachers and students.
