Imphal, April 13:
Thanks to the advancement in medical science, today operation on human ear to rectify hearing impairment and perforation of eardrum can be done without the actual use of surgical knife and which means no bleeding today.
And the good news is that, for the first time in Manipur, the same facility is now available at Raj Polyclinic at North AOC here.
With the help of Oto endoscopic surgery, the problem related to hearing impairment, perforation of ear drum, discharge from ear, etc, can be treated without undergoing knife-operation and at a much lesser cost and time, ENT specialist Dr P Dhakeshor said.
According to him 89 percent of the cases that might lead to loss of hearing can be treated successfully within the help of this new technique of endoscopic surgery.
This is a significant development, he added.
Dr Dhakeshor further explained that for undergoing endoscopic surgery, patients do not need to put up at hospital for long and the said operation can be conducted even while the patient is carrying on conversation with the doctors.
So the surgeon can easily find out the area or the region which is giving problem to the patient so much so that the patient can even assist the attending surgeon on the level of his hearing while performing the operation.
The patient can also be discharged from the hospital within one to two hours of performing the operation, and this type of operation does not caused bleeding and it is cost friendly, Dr Dhakeshwor added.
On the low level of awareness and popularity of endoscopic facility among the people of Manipur, Dr Dhakeshor attributed to lack of adequate trained doctors and cost factors of the equipment required for such treatment.
To popularise this medical treatment, a workshop on Oto Endoscopic is underway at the conference hall of Tampha Hotel at North AOC since yesterday.
The workshop is being organised by Manipur State ENT Surgeons in collaboration with Raj Polyclinic.
In all 50 delegates participated in the workshop and Dr RM Patil, who is an expert on Endoscopic Surgery of Ear is imparting training to the to the doctors.
Dr Dhakeshor further informed that in all 15 patient have been operated upon yesterday, and the workshop target to provide treatment to 30 patients before the end of the workshop.
