Imphal, August 30 2010:
Due efforts are being made to educate and spread awareness to the public so as to ensure success of the Zero Garbage Campaign which was launched with the objective of making Imphal a clean city, said PDA Chairman Dr Kh Loken.
Speaking to media persons at PDA office today, Dr Loken said that around 96 tonnes of garbage are being discharged from Imphal Municipal areas on the average daily.
Citing a survey report conducted in 2006, Loken said that each household located within IMC area discharge 400 gms to 500 gms of garbage every day on the average.
Although the IMC covers an area of 35 square Kms, the IMC has been picking up garbage from only 5 square Kms.
That is why the Zero Garbage Campaign was taken up to make the Imphal city clean and hygienic.
The campaign launched under MAHUD Department within IMC area since August 12 would continue till October 11 for two months.
But the campaign cannot be successfully executed without cooperation from NGOs and the general public, Dr Loken said.
Noting that there are about 45,000 houses under Ward number 27 of the IMC, the PDA Chairman said that each of these households have to register and due efforts would be made to make the campaign a success.
Moreover, plans are already afoot to enforce the Manipur Municipalities (Cleanliness and Sanitation) By-law 2010 at the earliest possible time.
Appealing to the people not to discharge garbage and waste materials within IMC area, Dr Loken called upon denizens of Imphal city to cooperate with IMC agents who come to their houses for collecting garbage.
To avoid slipping of waste materials, trucks carrying garbage should have roofs, Dr Loken added.
