In a major breakthrough, Meghalaya Police, assisted by citizens belonging to the minority community, arrested two of the four accused who were involved in the April 16 rape and murder of one Changiru Poumai alias Rita in Kohima.
According to reports received by Newmai News Network, the accused, identified as Abdul Basit (33) and Islam Uddin (17), both brothers and son of Md Kubad Uddin of Isamati village, Karimganj, Assam, were arrested from a coal mine in interior Jowai district of Meghalaya yesterday evening.
They are likely to be handed over to Kohima Police by tomorrow.
Two other culprits involved in the case, Md Lubib Ahmed (3Q), son of Md Samsul Haque of Batoya village and Del war Hussain (29), son of Ajir Uddin (both from Karimganj), were still at large.
It may be mentioned that Kohima Police recovered the body of the victim from under a culvert towards Dimapur Road in Kohima, a day after the murder.
Changiru who was the daughter of Ngaoni of Koide village, Senapati, Manipur had on that fateful day reportedly went missing after she had gone for shopping.
The incident drew widespread condemnation from various NGOs and also the community to which the accused belonged.
Earlier, Kohima Police issued a public notice seeking information on the whereabouts of the accused after they had gone underground after committing the crime.
According to media reports, hundreds of citizens also took out a rally in Karimganj in protest against the rape and murder incident.
People of Senapati held a massive rally yesterday at Senapati in protest against the rape and subsequent murder of the Poumai woman who was running a shop at near Naga Hospital to support her family.
Contaminated items burnt: Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (Tangkhul Youth Council) has burnt contaminated and expired goods worth Rs.1 lakh in the local market yesterday in front of the media and public.
Talking to our Ukhrul correspondent Addie Chiphang, TMNL president Rahao Horam said despite repeated warning to the shopkeepers, the traders continued to hoodwink the consumer by selling expired goods.
So in order to filtered out such unwanted practice in the Ukhrul district the TMNL had a month long survey operation & seized scores of contaminated/ expiry goods, mostly in essential commodities including Vanaspati ghee, mustard oil, tin fish, mineral water, biscuits, cold drinks & etc, he added.
He added that selling of expiry goods and those beyond the standard of consumption is a, heath hazard and under Consumers Protection Act 1986 the consumer forum can cease or jailed or impose fine to the defaulters if found.
It further adds that immediate action would be taken if any shopkeepers were selling in exorbitant price or expired goods from here after.
