Lamka, January 15 2013:
A rare vulture species identified as one of the two largest old vultures and true raptors across the world the Himalayan Vulture-weighing about 9 kilogram and measuring bout 7.5 ft with an expanded wing was today handed over to officials of the State Zoological Garden by its owner who had purchased it from its captors sometime
in December.
The large bird is said to have suddenly landed at Senvon village in Tipaimukh sub-division while on mid-flight with two others.
Villagers there had ensnared it and brought it for sale here.
A restaurant owner who was amazed by its sheer size bought it at an undisclosed amount and reared it at his home.

Unable to cope with the stinks emanating from the carcass of the bird's feed which in an average is about 4 kgs of meat every single day and seeing no point in further coughing up money to buy the highly expensive food, the rare bird's owner today said he had apprised the Deputy Commissioner Jacintha Lazarus about his willingness to hand over the vulture he had domesticated to the Zoo officials.
The DC then contacted the state zoo officials and it was finally handed over to them today in the presence of the Block Development Officer of Churachandpur Headquarters Khaikhopau Ngaihte.
