Union Ministry gives nod to Seri Project-II

The Union Ministry of Textiles has given its approval for commencement of second phase of the Sericulture Project in the State, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam has informed.
He was speaking as Chief Guest of the inaugural function of a workshop on Vermiculture and Vermicomposting held at the Project Management Complex at Sangaipat today.
The Minister stated that the first phase of Sericulture Project in the State has been completed successfully and the State is all set to start the second phase.
The approval of the Union Minister of Textiles has already been received and the Project has been included in the Special Scheme taken up by the Ministry in the North East region.
The second phase of the project would begin within March this year.
The Minister observed that use of vermicomposed fertilizer in the Mulberry farms would yield quality Mulberry plants, thereby giving quality foods to the silk worms.
And the silk worms in turn would produce good quality cocoons.
This workshop on vermiculture would help all those working in the field to the maximum.
Pointing out the need to produce food crops using organic manures, the Minister noted that the organic food crops are good for health and also fetch higher price in the market.
People who are health conscious go after this kind of food crops.
Delivering the Presidential speech, Principal Secretary (Commerce and Industries) O Nabakishore stated that the silk products manufactured in Manipur with various designs are set to be registered under the Geographical Indication Act.
Moirang Phee and Rani Phee have already been registered.
He informed that Silk clothes are in heavy demand in South Korea where the people use them during funeral ceremonies.
Silk clothes sold in the markets of South Korea cost around 1 lakh in Indian rupees.
In Manipur, a silk cloth can be made for just Rs 3000 to 4000.So, if these silk clothes are made and exported to South Korea, weavers can generate plenty of income, he added.
The function was also attended by Director of Sericulture Ginjamang Simte as Guest of Honour.
