Ukhrul, January 15 2013:
Looking for a classic example of eggcorn?! Then, log in to the website of Community Information Centre (CIC) on Manipur.
For anyone surfing for cyber database, the CIC website on Manipur has an embarrassing treat to offer as it has a high content of eggcorn a literary term refers to an idiosyncratic substitution of a word or phrase for a word or phrase that sound similar or identical.
Log in to the website (http://www.cic.nic.in/cicmanipur) to find the misspell words "tribel" for tribal, "Angon Ching" for Ango Ching, Lilium Mackliniae - the proper botanical name of Shirui Lily has been used as "Lillium Macklinal" and "Lilium Mackelind," to name a few.
These are classic cases of eggcorn, a term coined by a professor in linguistics Geoffrey Pullum in September 2003 .
The page on Ukhrul district, for instance, has score of indigenous names misspelled while the sites of other districts have similar cases.
More saddening to note is that the content also has full of grammatical slip-ups and too many parodies.
Under the fair and festival column of Ukhrul district, it has been mentioned that "Barring a few individuals the Tangkhuls have become Christian but most of the traditional festivals are being celebrate till now a days" .
This statement is far from truth as the tribe has stop practicing many traditional festivals.
In another instance, Laa Khanganui - a virgin dance of the Tangkhuls has been explained as "All the unmarried girls shall participate in this considered an immoral one" .
In fact, the festival is never an "immoral one" and only virtuous girls could take part.
To refer to the website for academic purpose, students and researchers find it so disappointing and unreliable to quote the site in their works.
A look into the bottom-line of the website indicates that it was developed by Manitron and its copyright has been dated 2002.It also notifies that the agency is not responsible for any errors but seeks suggestion and rectification for update.
Many web browsers opine that the data in the content needs a comprehensive correction and update.
The hilarious content, as some cyber buffs feel, is a victim of sub-standard work of the agency that developed the
website.
