As in other parts of the country, Teachers' Day was observed in the state under the aegis of the Education (Schools) Department wherein seven teachers of different districts were felicitated.

During the Teachers' day celebration held at the Directorate of Education (S) at Lamphelpat today, seven dedicated teachers were honoured with a shawl and cash reward of Rs 5000 each.
The seven teachers who were honoured with the State Teachers' Award 2009 are Headmaster of Uchiwa Govt High School Heikrujam Sarojkumar, Tongbram Kumar of Nambol Collegiate High School, Head-mistress of Phoijing No 6 Junior High School Lairenjam Chaobi Devi, Head-master of Ritinching Aided Junior High School Samte Charoilet, Yengkhom Kengba of Yangbi Govt High School, S Madhop of Jirighat Junior High School and Waikhom Usha of New Ideal High School.
Addressing the function as chief guest, Education Minister L Jayantakumar exhorted teachers to teach students proper manner and discipline scrupulously.
He observed that teaching methodology has changed considerably from what was followed in the earlier days.
Central Advisory Board of Education Ministers have discussed on bringing some significant changes in school education during a meeting held at Delhi on August 31, the Education Minister said.
The meeting deliberating on making students computer literate so that they can get access to e-learning system as well as to follow grading system in exams.
For this new initiative, the Union Government has been urged to give extra package for the Northeastern states.
The State Government has plans to provide computer laptops according to their class.
Jayantakumar said that 1000 computer laptops would be brought soon for distribution to students of both Government and private schools.
Calling upon employees of Education Directorate and Secretariat, Education Department not to do anything that would be detrimental to the interest of teachers, the Education Minister said that befitting actions would be initiated against negligent officials.
He said that efforts are being made to hike to a reasonable level the cash component of the awards being conferred to dedicated teachers.
Necessary measures would also taken up to distribute salaries of teachers in the first week of every month, he said.
In his presidential speech, Chairman of the Manipur Pollution Control Board MLA E Dwijamani stressed on the need for proper lesson planning on the part of the teachers while teaching students.
Education Commissioner PK Singh also attended the function as guest of honour.
