On a day when teachers are being honoured and awarded all over the state and the nation, in Manipur the story is different.The All Manipur Hill Districts Councils Teachers� Association (AMHDCTA) has started a "Hunger Strike" from September 5 (Teachers� Day) demanding primarily release of their pending salaries from March 2009 and some other demands.
The agitation in connection with their demands had been started by AMHDCTA from August 24 to 31 in the form of 'pen-down� strike and from September 2, 'protest demonstrations� were staged at different places in the hill districts of Manipur.
In addition to the demand for release of their pending salaries, other demands of the teachers� association include clearance of dearness allowance, ensuring 10% quota for teachers of AMHDCTA in B.Ed.
training centers and implementation of MGEL in the six hill districts councils including Sadar Hills, stated one of the teachers.
The "Hunger Strike" was staged today by the teachers at the head office of AMHDCTA at Sangapham, Imphal West district and the deadline given for a positive response from the state government was September 5.
