Imphal, September 05, 2009:
The local Weight and Measures office of Jiribam sub-division is in a pitiable condition due to the apathy of the concerned authority.
The understaffed office located near Jiri railway station in a rented house is being looked after two employees.
The office adorned by a worn out sign board is being forgotten by the public of Jiribam except some shopkeepers.
Apart from the table of the Inspector, other tables of the office are not in working condition as the legs are all broken.
It is learnt that the chowkidar has never returned to the office ever since he left for his house at Imphal since long time back.
Lab Attendant Gautam Adhikari rued that in the absence of Chowkidar and peon, he has been donning the roles of chowkidar cum peon.
Inspector K Novin stated that lack of adequate staff is hampering the functioning of the office.
Atleast one Assistant Inspector, one Assistant Controller, two Demonstrators and two Laboratory Attendants are needed to run the office with efficiency.
"In this regard, many appeals had been made to the higher authority to send requisite staff but nothing has been done till date", he added.
He further confided that due to the lack of staff even the periodical works of verification in regards to weight and measures cannot be carried out in the interior Barak Circle of Jiribam for the past 3-4 years.
