Imphal, May 02:
In pursuance of its demand for completion of the road development work from Mantripukhri to Koirengei along NH-39 and against the failure of the State Government to pay heed to its reminders, volunteers of the North Imphal United Clubs and Meira Paibi Organisation (NIUCAMO) has imposed an indefinite blockade along the highway with effect from today.
|
Meanwhile, NIUCAMO while declaring that it would enforce the blockade more vigorously from tomorrow, has appealed to all the commuters and the transporters along the highway to extend cooperation for the sake of its justified cause.
Since early morning today, volunteers of NIUCAMO and their supporters piled up boulders, timbers and burnt tyres at several sections of the highway.
Consequent upon the blockade most of the public transporters and private vehicles which used to ply along NH 39 stayed off the road.
The blockade supporters also vandalised some vehicles which defied the blockade.
Moreover, about 60 trucks going to other States to procure food grains and other consumer goods with IRB escort were stoned by bandh supporters at Khabam Lamkhai on account of which some vehicles suffered damages.
In response to the act of vandalism, the IRB personnel baton charged and dispersed the bandh supporters.
As a result of the IRB action, more than 20 blockade supporters including the joint secretary of NIUCAMO Tongbram Inaobi suffered casualties.
Even as the stretch of NH 39 from Khongnang Ani Karak to Koirengei has been expanded into a four-lane highway, the expansion is still incomplete in several sections thereby causing severe inconveniences to the commuters and the people settling along the road, even causing death of some precious lives in road mishaps that occurred along the stretch.
