Along with the arrest of Narengbam Marjit alias Thabal alias Yaima alias Sharma, who is the general secretary as well as the finance secretary of the proscribed UNLF by a combined force of Imphal East Police Commandos and Guwahati City Police from Paltan Bazar this morning, four main activists of the PLA have also been apprehended by Guwahati police.
Announcing this while addressing mediapersons at his office here this evening, Director General of Police (DGP) Y Joykumar claimed that the success of the joint operation launched by Imphal East Police Commandos and Guwahati Police in arresting the general secretary and finance secretary of the UNLF from Guwahati's Paltan Bazar today is the result of the recent crackdown launched by a strong team of State Police force at Kolkata and Guwahati.

The general secretary and finance secretary of UNLF, Lt Col Narengbam Marjit Singh alias Thabal alias Yaima alias Sharma (49) s/o Biramani of Nagamapal Singjubung Lairak was arrested by a joint team of seven police commandos of Imphal East District and Guwahati City Police personnel from Paltan Bazar, Guwahati at around 3 pm.
One grey colour Maruti car bearing registration number ASOI/R-2334, two Laptop computer, four mobile phones and Rs 47 lakhs in cash have also been recovered from his possession.
The crackdown on the suspected hideouts of the UGs located outside Manipur was launched on receipt of information that Government officials are being called for negotiation at Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Dimapur, Bangalore, the DGP said, adding that State Police felt that this trend cannot be stopped without hitting at the hideouts of the UGs.
While informing that a strong team of the State police force had been already sent to Kolkata once and Guwahati twice to monitor the movements of the UGs, Joykumar said the joint operation of the Imphal East Police Commandos and the Guwahati City Police was launched following a special tip off.
The arrest of the four PLA cadres by the Guwahati police was made possible with the feedback provided by the State police, he added.
Joykumar said that the arrest of the general secretary of the UNLF would throw a light on the finance and networking system of the outfit.
Consequently, all the necessary action wil be taken up in this regard, he said.
Stating that the cash amount recovered from Marjit may be the amount collected from various Government Departments at the end of the financial year, Joykumar , however, informed that Marjit has not yet disclosed from where he got the money apart from saying that he it had been handed to him by the army chief of the outfit.
Responding to a question, the DGP assured that necessary action would be taken up against the Government officials concerned if it could be established that the said amount had been given by them to the outfit.
There is already an instruction from the Chief Secretary for booking such officials under NSA, he added.
When countered what action had been taken against the three officials of the Agriculture Department who have allegedly gone to Guwahati to negotiate with the UGs in the light of the instruction given by the Chief Secretary, the DGP said it is difficult to taken action without evidences even if the officials who had gone to Guwahati have been identified.
To another question, the DGP replied that what are the informations contain in the two Laptops seized from Marjit has not yet been known.
The DGP informed that Marjit might be brought to Imphal either tomorrow or day after tomorrow.
It would also take some time to find out the cases involved by him.
Intimation on the arrest of the KRA cadres from Dimapur has also been received and arrangement would be made to bring them to Imphal, the DGP added.
Meanwhile, according to information received by the press, CJM of Kamrup district has given the permission for taking Marjit to Imphal.
