The Union Ministry of Rural Development has released grants-in-aid amounting to Rs 7.21 crore to Manipur for implementation of the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) during the current financial year 2007-08.Official sources said a sum of Rs 2.26 crore was released as part of first instalment of Central assistance to five districts namely Imphal West (Rs 37.87 lakh), Senapati (Rs 45.81 lakh), Thoubal (Rs 44.49 lakh), Ukhrul (Rs 50.69 lakh) and Imphal East (Rs 47.21 lakh).
A sum of Rs.4.22 crore was released on account of release of third and additional instalment to six districts namely Chandel (Rs 56.85 lakh), Imphal West (Rs 66.79 lakh), Senapati (Rs 100.13 lakh), Thoubal (Rs 81.40 lakh), Ukhrul (Rs 41.26 lakh) and Imphal East (Rs 76.11 lakh).
A sum of Rs 72.61 lakh was released as second instalment to Senapati district (Rs 40.08 lakh) and Thoubal district (Rs 32.53 lakh).
It further added that the release was towards plan expenditure and would be utilized for approved items of works subject to the conditions laid in the SGRY guidelines.
No deviation from the guidelines is permissible.
Mention may be made that the Prime Minister had announced launching of the ambitious scheme Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana with an annual outlay of Rs 10,000 crore on August 15, 2001 to provide a greater thrust to additional wage employment, infrastructural development and food security in the rural areas.
It was launched on September 25, 2001.
Under the scheme, 50 lakh tonnes of food grains amounting to Rs 5000 crore are provided free of cost to the State Governments and Union Territory administrations through Food Corporation of India.
The remaining funds of Rs 5000 crore are utilized to meet cost component of wages and material costs.
The Scheme envisages atleast 100 days of employment generation every year in the rural areas.
The scheme provides facility to all the rural poor who are in need of employment and are willing to take up manual or unskilled work in and around his or her village and habitation.
