Inauguration of a five day long photo exhibition and gathering of journalists marked the 33rd foundation anniversary of All Manipur Working Journalists� Union held with a simple but impressive function at the Manipur Press Club premises today.

The foundation anniversary celebration was held with Sports Minister N Biren and president of AMWJU S Hemant as the chief guest and president respectively while former president of the Union AK Sanaton and veteran scribe L Iboyaima graced the occasion as the guests of honour.
PRO of PIB (DW) Col Rajesh Mishra and Managing Director of Shija Hospital and Research Institute Dr Palin also attended the function as special invitees.
Among other veteran journalists former AMWJU functionaries W Shyamjai, N Tombiraj, RK Ranendrajit and L Sharatchandra spoke on the occasion.
Recounting difficulties faced in the formative years of AMWJU and sharing their personal field experiences, the speakers were unanimous in drawing the attention of the Government for introduction and implementation of journalists� welfare schemes.
Their speech also focused on the need to show respect to veteran journalists by the new generation journalists, inculcating spirit of professionalism, fearlessness and more importantly unbiased reporting.
The journalists were also reminded of their responsibilities in fighting various problems currently besieging the Manipuri society and to suggest ways to remedy the situation.
In his address, the chief guest - himself a former scribe - acknowledged strenuous working atmosphere being endured by State journalists and assured to take personal interest and initiative in ameliorating some of the problems.
Noting that welfare schemes of journalists including pension entitlements and health care amenities need to be reviewed on priority basis for better working conditions, N Biren also stressed on more effort from the scribes in disseminating report/information of public importance and desired that violent incidents be spared of sensationalism so as to present manipur in a more palatable manner to the outside world.
The celebratory mood continued till late evening with the Manipur Press Club compound illuminated with candle lights.
