Imphal, September 16:
Taking serious note of the shrinking job market for indigenous people in Manipur due to huge influx of skilled and unskilled labourers from other States of India, the Manipur Workers' Union has strongly advocated for a healthy work culture.
Speaking to reporters today at its head office at Rup Mahal Tank, Imphal advisor of the Union Nabakumar Oinam remarked that the indigenous people lack the mental attitude to engage themselves in petty and casual works.
Taking advantage of the reluctance of the indigenous people to engage themselves in casual works, people have occupied almost the entire market for such jobs in Manipur.
As a result, the number of unemployed persons has been increasing at an alarming rate which has a direct bearing on the rising crime rate.
In such a juncture, it is crucial for the people of Manipur to take up whatever job one is adept at without considering the nature of the work, asserted Nabakumar adding that the Union is always open to all individuals interested to earn their livelihood through their own dignified labour.
So far the Manipur Workers' Union has 140 members.
These members are presently engaged in several odd jobs in and around Imphal as porters, cleaners for markets, street hawkers of different items, dish washers for community feasts, barbers and painters.
With a view to expand such activities of the Union all over the State, branch offices of the Union will be opened at all the district headquarters very soon, informed Nabakumar.
He also invited all unemployed youths having no source of income to join the Union.
N Chuminthang is the president of the Union while Moirangthem Dhiren and AK Jiten are its general secretary and assistant general secretary, he added.
