Imphal, November 30:
Intensifying its agitation in connection with the demand for upgradation of Jiribam Sub-Division to a full-fledged revenue district, volunteers of Jiribam District Demand Committee have closed down the Government offices of ADC, FCS, ICDS, DIS, Forest, ZEO, PWD, BDO, YAS, Agriculture, Sericulture, Co-operatives, Municipality, Employment Exchange and Taxation which were allegedly functioning in defiance of the boycott call issued by the Committee earlier.
These offices were found operating in defiance of the boycott call during an inspection drive conducted this morning and they have been subsequently closed down, Committee convenor Y Romio Singh informed in a statement.
If these offices continue to defy the boycott and are found opening again, then the authorities concerned themselves should be held responsible for any eventuality, the convenor warned.
The convenor further informed that there are no signboards with word Manipur written on it in Jiribam after the Committee volunteers erased/removed such signboards.
Romio also informed that a joint meeting of the representatives of Jiribam District Demand Committee and political leaders of various political parties in Jiribam was also held at 1 pm today.
The meeting attended by political leaders of Congress (I), BJP, NCP, CPI (M) and Independent candidates unanimously resolved to support the ongoing agitation and continue to intensify it till the demand for converting Jiribam into a full-fledged revenue district is fulfilled.
Along with closing down the party offices, the participating political leaders also agreed to stop all related campaigns in connection with the forthcoming Assembly election, Romio claimed.
Stating that the Committee has noted down the registration number of all the vehicles which plied along the National Highway-53 over the past few days with security escorts, Romio categorically warned that action would be taken up against these vehicles after the ongoing strike is over.
Meanwhile, while endorsing the demand for conversion of Jiribam into a full-fledged revenue district, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has appealed to the agitation to exempt education from the purview of the ongoing agitation.
