Imphal, November 30:
The endeavour of MSF's mobile team to ensure incident free and peaceful election for college students' unions was largely successful this year, said a press release issued by MSF.
On account of the preparedness of MSF to prevent resorting to force and discriminatory approach, disruptive and high handed elements were deterred from indulging in unfair and undemocratic practices in the election process, said MSF.
However, overcome with the desire to win elections some candidates indulged in picking up students, hosting tea parties and expending huge amount of money though it was a little subdued compared to previous polls.
As such, it is clear that such unhealthy practices would continue to plague student body elections until and unless the direct system of election is followed.
Once the indirect system of elections is adopted for student unions as mooted by MSF last year, election expenditure would be reduced to 1 percent and there would no more hostility among students during election time.
It would also save precious time and students would not feel any restlessness during elections, remarked MSF.
Noting that indulgence in corrupt practices by student leaders once they are elected in school/college/university polls is the most pressing and disturbing issue for the student community of the State, it lamented that some student leaders are involved in the contract works of their academic institutes to earn easy while conveniently ignoring the welfare of the student community and the interest of his/her own institute.
It further appeal to all elected student leaders to stay away from corrupt practices and self-centred activities including involvement in contract works.
While extending gratitude to all the students and guardians who extended cooperation MSF's mobile team in its drive to ensure peaceful polls, MSF declared that it would stand against elected students leaders involving in contract works of their own institutes.
A joint meeting of all the candidates projected by MSF would be held on December 3 at 10 am at MSF head office to discuss the future course of actions, it said while informing all the candidates to attend the meeting.
