Imphal, March 28, 2014:
People in the interior villages of Tera Khongshangbi, Kwakta and Khudekpi under Moirang in Bishnupur district are now facing acute shortage of potable water, thus forcing them to draw water by making holes along the bank of Ngaitei Lok river for daily use.
The problem of scarcity of water has been caused following the blockage of the flow of Ngaitei Lok river since the Government started developing a new water supply scheme at Moirang.
People of the three villages entirely depend on Ngaitei Lok not just for water but also for their livelihood, said a villager of the area.
He claimed that the water supply scheme has failed and at the same time the poor villagers are not getting water from the river.

The villager pointed out that the water supply scheme can be developed using water from Loktak Lake and spare Ngaitei Lok for the three villages.
The villagers in the area are now drawing water from underground by digging up holes along the river bank for daily use.
This could make the villagers vulnerable to waterborne diseases.
