Imphal, February 10, 2010:
Leaders and active workers of Janata Dal (United), Manipur State Unit held a protest demonstration against the soaring price of essential commodities in Manipur in front of the head office of the party on Governor road today.
Party president, Okram Raghu and working president Moirangthem Tombi were among those who took part in the protest demonstration.
A press release issued by General Secretary of JD (U), Manipur State Unit, L Lenin lamented that the present state government was interested only in seeking huge plan size money from the Centre but not interested in taking steps to check the soaring price of essential commodities in the state.
This showed that the government did not have any concern for the poor people and daily wage earners.
The press release further regretted that Public Distribution System was virtually non existent.
Essential commodities such as rice, sugar, kerosene and other items were sold at the market at three/four times higher than the price fixed by the government.
The authority has completely failed to distribute these commodities.
Not even half a litre of kerosene could be distributed among the people.
Therefore, the state unit of the party staged the sit-in-protest extending solidarity to the nationwide protest held today under the leadership of NDA's convenor Sharad Yadav, General Secretary Lenin stated.
He further criticised the present state government for its apalling apathy towards the ever increasing prices and artificial scarcity of the essential commodities in Manipur.
