Imphal, August 08 2010:
Decrying the Lilong Ushoipokpi brawl between the local villagers and a team of Thoubal police commandos in the night of August 3 in which one Havildar succumbed to injuries later while a Constable sustained critical injuries, a protest demonstration was staged at Thoubal Athokpam today.
On the other hand, taking strong exception to the notification issued by Thoubal Police asking those involved in the mob action to surrender, a public meeting was held at Ushoipokpi today where it was resolved to impose an indefinite bandh on Imphal-Moreh road from 5 am of August 10 in case the money reportedly confiscated by Thoubal police commandos at gun point is not returned by August 9, positively.
The protest demonstration at Thoubal Athokpam was staged under the aegis of the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Havildar L Somendro.
The protesters put up placards and festoons which read as "Punish those involved in the Ushoipokpi killing", "What was the fault of Somendro", "We condemn the killing of Somendro" etc.
Addressing the protest demonstration, many speakers condemned the brutal killing of Havildar N Somendro and causing grievous injury to Constable N Robindro.
Later, a memorandum demanding initiation of due legal actions against the prime culprits involved in the killing of Somendro, provision of commensurate compensation to the bereaved family and a suitable Government job to a member of the family was submitted to the Chief Minister.
On the other hand, a public meeting was organised at Lilong Ushoipokpi under the aegis of the JAC Against the Brutal Torture of Md Sanayai's family by Manipur Police Commando (Thoubal).
The meeting adopted different resolutions which included institution of a judicial enquiry into the August 3 incident and reimbursement of Rs 1,80,000 through the JAC reportedly confiscated by Thoubal police commandos at gun point from Sanayai's family.
Urging the State Government to pay medical bills for the family members of Md Sanayai who suffered injuries at the hand of Thoubal commandos, dismissal of guilty commando personnel, transfer of Thoubal Additional SP Haobijam Jogeshchandra away from Thoubal district etc were other resolutions adopted at the meeting.
It further decided to impose indefinite bandh on Imphal-Moreh road from August 10 in case the JAC's charter of demands which would be forwarded to the Governor and the Union Home Minister are not fulfilled by August 9 .
