Imphal, May 14 2010:
Objecting to describing the hills of Manipur as 'Naga hills' in the map of Manipur printed in the 32nd edition, 2010 of Oxford School Atlas, Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) has banned the sale of this atlas edition in Manipur until the mistake is rectified with immediate effect from today.
Addressing a press conference in this connection at its office here today, MSF president Md Atabuddin pointed out that the hills of Manipur have been described as 'Naga hills' in the Manipur map printed on page 11 of the 32nd edition, 2010 of Oxford School Atlas under the chapter 'Indian Sub-Continent : Physical'.
This is a very big mistake, Atabuddin said, adding that writing Naga hills within the map of Manipur is unacceptable.
Informing that a letter has already been sent to Oxford University Press, YMCA Library Building, Jaisingh Road, New Delhi, which is the publisher of the atlas in question here, demanding correction and issuing an apology to the people of Manipur within 10 days, the student leader warned that in case the publisher fails to apologise and correct the mistake, then necessary legal steps would be initiated.
Atabuddin also drew the attention of the Govt of Manipur to take up necessary responsibility in ensuring correction of the mistake in the map that may mislead others on the history of Manipur.
