With completion the of the term of its president and councillors, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) which was elected on May 17, 2006 has been dissolved today and the process for holding new election has been started with formation of an Election Committee.
Addressing a press conference at MUSU office today, outgoing president Ch Rupachandra announced the dissolution of the student body and spoke about the various student welfare programmes taken up during his term.
With the dissolution of the former executive committee of MUSU, an Election Committee comprising of three members has been set up and the election of the new president and councillors of MUSU would be conducted within one month in accordance with the constitution of MUSU, Rupachandra said.
On the activities taken up for the welfare of the student community during his term, Rupachandra claimed 'since we assumed the office of MUSU, we have been able to bring normalcy in the academic atmosphere of the university'.
We have also brought down the admission fees and the cost of the prospectus, hostel accommodation have been provided, the university library of the University has been modernised along with procuring 25 more computers and the service at the reading room has been extended from 7.30 am to 8 pm," he said.
The Manipur University Research Club (MURC) which had remained defunct as the sanctioned amounts were always misused by the previous presidents too have been made functional from our time, he claimed.
In the domain of games and sports as well, a Mukna competition had been organised from February 24 to 25 with the main objective of promoting indigenous games.
In the All India Inter-University Archery Championship and Women's Hockey tournament was hosted by the University, Manipur University won both the trophies.
Moreover, the University won the team champion trophy in the Eastern Zonal Youth Festival as well as in all the cultural events of the National Youth Festival.
'From time to time, we have also submitted memoranda to the Governor, Vice Chancellor, Prime Minister and President appraising them with the problems of lack of adequate infrastructures and other required developmental works of the University', he said.
To ensure that the students are equipped with up-to-date knowledge in their studies, LCD protectors, Laptop computers and other necessary accessories have been provided to all the Departments, the outgoing president said.
He further claimed that the posts which have been laying in the faculties have been filled up and scholarships for OBC/SC and ST students issued without any further delay.
In order to achieve all these, me and my councillors have worked sincerely and with dedication, Rupachandra said.
He also appealed to all concerned to ensure that the upcoming election of MUSU may be held peacefully and in a free and fair manner.
