A cycles gifted to the best hawker during the occasionIMPHAL, Jan 13 : Along with presentation of awards to hawkers and media-persons, daily eveninger Kangleipakki Meira celebrated its 29th foundation day at Manipur Press Club here today.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, MLA Ng Bijoy observed that the role of media in a democratic society is very important.
Media can change the direction of the society.
So, media should motivate the people and help in bringing development and peace in the State, he exhorted.
Mediapersons should write about science and technology advancement to divert the mind of the young people from killings and other unwanted incidents taking place in the State, he added.
In his presidential address, president of All Manipur Working Journalists'Union (AMWJU) and editor of The Sangai Express (Manipuri edition) Khogendra Khomdram noted that encouraging media-persons with presentation of awards is appreciable and it would encourage mediapersons to work with dedication even more.
He pointed out that Government institutions like DIPR have been giving away many awards to mediapersons to encourage them.

"But we always forget the contribution of the sub-editors who work at the desk even more harder than any other".
There has been no encouragement or presentation of awards for them.
So, they are not known by anyone nor people know what they do.
This is despite the fact that they are the most important functionaries in any media house.
"So, we need to encourage them as well and institute awards for them in recognition of their dedication to their work and contribution to the society, he proposed.
Khogendra further pointed out that medical facility to media persons has still not been provided by the State Government.
The Government has kept saying that the matter for providing medical facilities to the mediapersons is being discussed.
Khogendra said that media in Manipur has been facing various pressures from various quarters including UG groups and civil organisations.
Civil organisations may be saying that we are always with you to media.
But when the real problem comes, they disappear simply.
All that the mediapersons in Manipur need is moral support and nothing more, he added.
Director of Agriculture Dr Palendro, who was also present at the occasion, observed that when media houses remain closed and newspaper publications are suspended for days in Manipur, the public feel cut off from the rest of the world with no idea about what is happening around.
He appealed to the all concerned not to give any disturbance in the functioning of media houses in Manipur.
