Imphal, May 10 2009: A team of Imphal East commandos arrested two women activists of KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman group) thereby foiling attempt to abduct wife of an officer today.

Briefing media persons at Imphal East District Police Hqs this afternoon, Additional SP H Birababu said a team of Imphal East commandos intercepted Naorem ningol Maibam (O) Thoibi Devi alias Ichanthoibi (33) w/o late Chaoba and Maibam ningol Thangjam (O) Bala Devi alias Ngamkheingakpi (35) w/o late Bijoy, both of Moreh ward no 9 and another woman at Lamlong Keithel at about 10.30 am today.

On questioning it was learnt that the third woman is the wife of an SO in a Government Department and that she was being taken captive by Bala and Thoibi.

However, the Addl SP refused to disclose the name the wife of the SO.

Thoibi was earlier arrested by Imphal East commandos as a KCP cadre in October last year.

Bala is a trained cadre of KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman).

She was among the third batch of the outfit's women wing.

Her army number is 60 .

One 9 mm pistol with two live rounds have been seized from Bala's possession, the Addl SP said.

Claiming that a new modus operandi employed by UG groups, particularly KCP-MC (Lamyanba Khuman group) in extortion has been exposed with the arrest of the two women, Birababu said initially, demands of huge amounts will be served.

Then they would strike agreement with individuals/families concerned at much lower amount.

But they would ask a woman of the family or wife of the individual to deliver the money at some specified spot.

There they would take the woman as captive and bargain for the original amount demanded in the first place, he added.

There have been instances of UG groups using widows and drug addicts not only in extortion but also in abduction and transportation of weapons, he said.

The Addl SP observed that KCP-MC group was not taking up arms under any revolutionary principle but is are extortionists.

Quoting disclosure of the arrested women, Birababu conveyed that one Pamel Meitei of Sugnu instructed them to bring the SO's wife to a location in Ukhrul district.

To carry out the task, a pistol was also delivered to the women at Kwakeithel yesterday.
