Imphal, June 07 2009:
Even though the MAHUD Department has officially communicated to the State PWD to submit relevant report with regard to installation of traffic signal light system in Imphal areas the latter is faced with technical difficulties in view of close location of the proposed points.
The MAHUD Department reportedly issued a reminder yesterday, through its Secretary, to the PWD authorities to put forth relevant information for early installation of the traffic signal system which the latter is unlikely to oblige in the immediate future as logistical problems have cropped up.
Confirming the MAHUD's formal intimation, a PWD official preferring anonymity confided that location of some of the proposed traffic points in short distance with the adjacent road crossing is a factor that needs to be closely reviewed and minutely studied before the traffic control measure can be processed.
Pointing out that when the signal system was conceived some four years back proposal was for installation of the system at 17 points/road crossings within the capital city, the official told The Sangai Express and added that as the some of the proposed points are at close distance to one another the matter merits revision.
Citing an example, he said distance between one of the proposed locations from the Chief Minister's official bungalow to the Raj Bhavan (Nityaipat Chuthek) is only about 180 metres while from the latter point to the western gate of kangla is even less.
Whether the previously identified points should be complied with or there is need for relocation of traffic points merit proper studies to avoid complications in the future for which experts have to be consulted to finalise the matter, he further said.
it is pertinent to mention here that in 2005 installation works for 17 Traffic Signal Light System in Imphal areas was entrusted to the National Building Construction Company but the project had been reassigned to the PWD as the NBCC declined and stayed away from the Rs 96.88 lakh project.
Even though MAHUD had proposed 17 points/road crossings the PWD has been assigned to identify feasible locations, and if required, submit recommendations.
