Folklore has direct social and political relevance, and it can help in enhancing the sympathy and help to achieve mutual co-operation and social cohesion, said state Governor, Gurbachan Jagat speaking at the inaugural function of the three day seminar on "Status of Folklore of North East India" and 33rd session of the Congress at Manipur University today.
The seminar has been organized by the Manipur University in collaboration with the Indian Folklore Congress.
Delivering his speech as chief guest of the inaugural function, Governor Gurbachan Jagat underlying the varied nature of culture of the North-east said, "We can think of establishing unity in diversity in the regional as well as national context which is the need of the present day world that is passing through mistrust and apocalyptic social conditions.
The effort of holding the seminar which not only its theme but also sub-themes pertaining to the region here in the state is right one, the Governor said lauding the organizers.
"Their effort is quite appropriate because the region has very rich folklore, comprising tales, myths, legends, epics, ballads, proverbs, riddles customs, traditions, beliefs festivals and performing arts".
"They all collectively show the identity of the people, peculiarities of their life and experience.
On the whole, they constitute the age-old and multiple heritage of the region.
As a matter of fact, the elements of culture are embedded in folklore," he added.
Concentrating on the north east is very important so far the theme of the seminar concern, the Governor said exploring the need for exchange of idea and understanding and appreciate each other.

Folklore as a whole is a powerful system of discourse that carries deep social and cultural significance.
"We should realize the ideas and values of all elements of folklore.
It is time to lay stress on the dignity of all cultures - both big and small and the need for co-existence with economic prosperity and cultural greatness on the foundation of peace, the Governor went on to observe expressing hope that the effort of the seminar will help in creating more awareness on the important of folklore among the people of the country.
