Troops of Assam Rifles in Ukhrul district gunned down three underground activists in reported gun clash early today at Sorde village under Kasom Khullen police station, officials reports said.
Three rebels suspected to be cadres of the separatist United National Liberation Front (UNLF) were killed by the troops of 12 Assam Rifles who were on alert at the general areas of Kasong and Sorde villages in the interior Ukhrul district early today at about 3.30 am.
One AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with 10 live rounds, two 9 mm pistol loaded with a magazine containing two live rounds, a hand grenade and five empty cases of AK-47 were recovered from the clash site in the further search operation in the area in the aftermath of ceasing the exchange of fire that lasted for about five minutes.
The clash erupted when the troops challenged the underground cadres on observing their movement in suspicious manner toward the Nambasi village.
The undergrounds opened fired in heavy volume in which troops instantly returned the firing, a statement of the PRO, IGAR(S) said.
It stated that the fire fight continue for about five minutes and in ensuing firefight shot dead one underground.
The firefight continued for approximately five minutes, undergrounds broke contact and fled taking advantage of the darkness.
But two more dead bodies were spotted in further search operations.
Meanwhile, district commander of KCP (KK Nganba group) finance section, self style major N Kiran alias Bobby son of N Ibobi of Naran Seina Maning Leikai in Bishnupur district has been apprehended by the troops of Maratha Light Infantry.
Police said he was nabbed by the troops at about 2.30 pm on last Tuesday from Thamnapokpi area during a counter insurgency operation and handed over to Moirang police station of Bishnupur where a case against him registered and taken into custody.
One hand grenade and a demand letter of Rs 5,00,000 addressed to one Nabin Singh running a private school, Delight Public School at Moirang Lamkhai recovered from the apprehendee, the police added.
