Porto Alegre, Brazil, January 26:
The fifth World Social Forum opened today at the Brazilian city Porto Alegre, known for its progressive citizenry and citizens' participatory governance, with over 100,000 people taking to the streets in a colourful and strong protest march against the present state of affairs in the world today.

CORE will be participating as a foundation member of the South Asian Solidarity for Rivers and Peoples (SARP), along with Rio Vivos (a South American regional coalition of movements and NGOs focusing on water issues, ECOA in Brazil which is fighting for the world's largest wetlands system, BothENDS from the Netherlands, and other organisations from Latin America in a number of strategy development workshops for the conservation of wetlands, people's integrated river basin management and how local initiatives could influence international and national water policy in preparation for the IV World Water Forum to be held in Mexico City in March 2006.
