A five day training workshop of the Volunteers Training Workshop on Disaster Preparedness organised by the Manipur Science and Technology Council under the sponsorship of the National Council for Science started from today at the Manipur Science Centre.
The training workshop was opened with a function graced by commissioner of science and technology H Imocha as chief guest and presided over by executive director of the Manipur Science and Technology Council, Th Surendranath.
Director of science and technology department Utamchand Laishram attended as guest of honour.
Recalling that Manipur is situated at the frequently jolt earthquake zone, H Imocha cautioned that at any time, a high magnitude earthquake may faced in the state.
Keeping this mind and considering the need for taking up precaution measure, the training workshop is being organised.
It is a must to teach youths on the technical skills of rescue work at the time of any disaster, observed the director Utamchand reminding that taking into account of this need, disaster management has been included in the school syllabus.
Disaster may face at any time, any moment.
Volunteers taking part in the programme should shared the knowledge they attain from the training to their colleagues and help in spreading the awareness on facing the disaster management, the director said.
Speaking as president of the function Th Surendranath reiterated that the north eastern region including Manipur is among the five earthquake zone of the globe.
High magnitude earthquake had faced in the pass and the same pay repeat again.
Natural disaster could not be avoided by anyone.
Only the things to face it to manage it from causing mass scale damages using technical know how.
Besides this, there were also artificial disasters as for instance the Bhopal Gas Tragedy due to gas leak from a chemical industry which had claimed life of hundreds.
Every body needs to prepare to face all such disasters, he added.
On the first day of the training workshop, faculty of Academy of Training, Imphal Ch Rajendro talked on "Basic Concept of Disaster Management, Chief Engineer of PWD, Th Joykumar on "Construction of Earthquake Resistant Structure.
A total of 34 volunteers are taking part in the five day training workshop.
