Imphal, September 28:
While hailing the report of the Lyngdoh Commission instituted by the Supreme Court concerning elections of student unions, the SFI Manipur State Committee has pointed some alleged flaws.
A statement issued by the student body quoting media reports observed that use of only hand written posters in elections in this age of advanced technology as suggested by Lyngdoh Commission is irrational.
It also flayed the ban on processions outside the campus of the educational institutions.
SFI/MSC further maintained that "politicians should not be allowed to interfere in the student union election process but students should be allowed to interact with them and learn about the policies that ultimately affect the student community at large".
It also disapproved the upper age limit of 28 years fixed by the Commission for the candidates of student body elections.
The student body demanded implementation of the report by incorporating local considerations instead of implementing the report as it was.
Further, as the universities have been empowered to decide on the mode of elections, SFI/MSC asked the Manipur University and Central Agriculture University, Imphal to take into account of the local situation so as to ensure active participation of student community in the process of exercising their rights.
