"Shumang Leela Numit" (the day of Shumang Leela) was celebrated today by the Manipur Shumang Leela Council at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound.
State Education Minister, L Jayentakumar graced the function as chief guest which was marked by the distribution of awards to the Shumang Leela artistes.
Speaking on the occasion, Jayentakumar termed Shumang Leela a forceful theatre form of the state which can give a thrilling impact to the audience.
Artistes in the play can draw the attention of the audience to his acting of happiness or sorrow.
The art form is taking a significant role in drawing the society in the right direction.
While lauding the efforts of the artistes of the theatre form by keeping a place of its own�the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, the Minister expressed confidence that the construction of the remaining part of the shanglen will be completed at the earliest with the concerted effort of the artistes.
Advisor of the council, Dr M Nara, who presided over the function, said that Shumang Leela is taking a main role in educating the people which is an indispensable part of the society for marching forward.
Shumang Leelas are leading the society in the right direction by exposing the negative side of the society to make the people aware of the consequences to be followed by the exposed negative side.
Next year (2011), the celebration of the day will complete 10 years.
On the occasion, the Council is planning to organise a mass rally, he added.
Earlier, before the formal celebration function started, the gathering led by the chief guest observed a two minute silence to pay homage to the artistes who have passed away.
The chief guest also conferred the Thokchom Iboyaima Award 2010 on Akham Niladhwaja Khuman.
