A public meeting held at Singjamei Keithel today unanimously resolved reintroduction of the Inner Line Permit system in Manipur to save its economy from being controlled by the outsiders and retain the administrative power in the hands of the native people.
The public meeting organised by Inner Line Permit System demand Committee was attended by Ima Jhandhabi as president, convenor of ILP Demand Committee Yumnamcha Dilipkumar as chief guest and H Ibotombi Khuman as guest of honour.
Speaking as chief guest of the meeting, Yumnamcha Dilipkumar said Manipur was one of the sovereign independent nations of the South East Asia with a chequered history.
After the British left India, Manipur also regained its independence on August 14, 1947.But after it become under the domination of India, the people of Manipur have been fighting a long struggle against various oppressive measures, he said.
With cancellation of the Passport system by then Chief Commissioner of Manipur Himat Singh on November 18, 1950, there has been no let up to the influx of outsiders in Manipur so much so that in accordance to the census report of 2001, the number of migrants was more than tribal population settling in the hill areas of Manipur, he said noted.
Now the outsiders have control and monopoly over the economic activities but have also made in road into the administrative affairs of the State, he expressed concerned.
H Ibotombi Khuman emphatically stated that Inner Line Permit system should be reintroduced in Manipur so as to avoid the fate of the Tripuris who have not only been reduced to minority in their own homeland, but the governance fallen into the hands of the outsiders, befallen on the Manipuris.
