Villagers of Parbung and Thanlon sub-divisions paid homage to Colonel Rajeev Bakshi who laid down his life in a battle to drive away the cadres of proscribed UNLF, PREPAK and PLA from the area three years back.
According to a press release issued by PIB (Defence Wing), Colonel Bakshi fought gallantly to free the tribals from the diktats of the proscribed cadres.
Till date, every household including children remember the Colonel and his brave soldiers by organising a memorial service and sports and cultural events, the release added.
The people of Parbung organised Rajeev Bakshi Memorial Football Tournament from January 15 to 20 to remember and honour their brave hero.
The tournament was coordinated and supported by 12 Madras stationed at Parbung.
The tournament attracted football teams from 38 villages including some from neighbouring Mizoram.
Commanding Officer of 12 Madras distributed prizes to the winning teams.
A wreath laying ceremony and a memorial service were also organised in which villagers paid homage at 'Bakshi Hill'.
Colonel ASN Rao laid a wreath on behalf of Maj Gen Shakti Gurung.
People requested that Army should continue to stay in these areas and ensure early completion of Tipaimukh Dam, repairing of NH-150 and functioning of SDO office, PHC, police station and Government schools, the release added.
