Under the military civic actio programme, General Officer Commanding of 57 Mountain Division Maj Gen Shakti Gurung donated boxing and gymnasium equipments to Mary Kom Boxing Academy, Langol today.
The total worth of the donated sports items is stated to be Rs 4 lakhs.
Speaking at the occasion, the GOC expressed confidence that with the provision of modern gymnasium equipments and boxing gears the Academy will be able to groom and produce world class boxers.
Reminding that inspite of being small in size and population Manipur finished overall second to Services in last previous (33rd) National Games held at Guwahati, Shakti Gurung also called upon the Academy's youngsters as well as the State to strive for excellence in the sports arena.
Hailing international pugilists including MC Mary Kom, Dinkoo Singh, L Sarita and Suranjoy Singh among others for bringing laurel to Manipur as well as the country, the GOC pledged that Army's endeavour to motivate the youngsters pursue and excel in sports would continue.
He also refered to the recruitment rally conducted in April this by the 57 Mountain Division exclusively for sportspersons of Manipur to underscore the Army's commitment in not only encouraging sports movement in the State but also to promote peace, security and development in every sphere of life.
The sports items donated today included personal boxing equipment for 26 young and budding boxers and large number of modern gymnasium equipment, added a statement issued by the Army.
