Lamka, July 14 2009:
The eastern canal of Khuga Multipurpose Project here, suffered another set-back as its earthen embankment breached again at T Daijang village, the third instance since its first trial run mid-last year, and the second in the last twenty days.
A sizeable fish pond and paddy fields belonging to five villagers were over flooded as the canal breached early today at around 4 .
Cracks and craters, according to sources, have been seen along the region, that collapsed today and the department has already started recovery works.
|
Yet, they failed to avert the imminent collapse as their pre-emptive drive to thwart any further breach fell short.
Local sources said the department has been struggling to retain the canal wall in the region, about 5 kms from the dam, with a bull-dozer till late yesterday, reclaiming most of the half kilometer long region, where loose embankments have been reported.
The breach occurred about five meters from the portion where the department halted their retrieving works yesterday.
Besides water-logging a fishpond and several paddy fields on the upper berth, a paddy field of about three Sanggam on a low berth region were flooded adjoining human habitation.
The khuga canal breached for the first time on July 9 last year at 3.1 kms after a trial run, another portion again breached last month at 9 kms, and today's was at 5 kms.
All the three case of canal breaches occurred on the right canal.
